A child’s fourth year of life is like none other. At this stage in childhood development, children have a natural, heightened curiosity. They enjoy discovery, surprises, and immersing themselves fully in every experience they encounter. At this stage, your child’s potential for learning is at an all-time high. It’s the reason that Fortis Academy is now offering pre-kindergarten, or as it’s commonly known, pre-K.
What is pre-K?
It’s a program for 4-year-olds that provides an academic and social foundation for kindergarten as well as the rest of their school years. The school day is a mix of play, where they learn valuable social skills, and direct instruction, where they are introduced to basic subjects like reading, writing, mathematics, history, and science.
The day mirrors the kindergarten schedule, beginning at 8:15 a.m. and ending at 12:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. In fact, our pre-K students are included in the kindergarten classroom. The teacher provides pre-K students with basic instruction and kindergarten students with more advanced instruction. Children can work at their own pace, and, given our small class sizes at Fortis, they will receive plenty of one-on-one instruction in a warm, caring environment.
In pre-K you can expect your child to learn the alphabet, numbers, days of the week, and basic writing skills. They’ll learn to follow basic instructions, mastering things like hand washing, taking turns, and how to stay on task for short periods of time. Along the way, they will be exposed to history through books and storytelling, and they’ll learn basic science concepts with simple hands-on experiments. They’ll be memorizing simple texts through rhythm, rhyme, and movement.
While Fortis has a strong focus on academic rigor, our pre-k children will be spending a good part of their day playing. Play is a critical part of social development, and we will provide a mix of engaging, structured activities and fun free-play. They won’t know it, and parents might not recognize it, but our pre-K students will be learning social skills to last them a lifetime. Through play, children learn to form relationships, self control, respect for others, cooperation, and how to express themselves in an appropriate way. These concepts are taught through encouragement and positive reinforcement.
At Fortis Academy, we want to help you make the most of your child’s early years, and pre-K provides a great opportunity to help them reach their fullest academic potential later in life. Fortis is now enrolling students in pre-K, and will continue to enrollment throughout the school year. We encourage you not to wait until kindergarten to begin your child’s academic journey.
